After completing the teeth straightening treatment from your orthodontist, use either braces or aligners, it does not matter as you need to wear retainers to preserve the results of your orthodontic treatment. Not only does getting orthodontic treatment from an orthodontist straighten your teeth as it plays only the initial part of the process, but to complete it, you must wear retainers. This blog post explains the importance of orthodontic retainers,  the pros and cons of both permanent and removable retainers so that you can choose what best fits you.

What is a retainer?

During orthodontic treatment, all the hard work is done to bring back the teeth to the correct position, but once you remove your braces or aligners, there will be no guarantee that your teeth will remain in the same corrected position. So, to prevent the aligned teeth from getting to their old position, retainers are recommended by the orthodontist.

There are two types of retainers

  • Fixed Retainers
  • Removable Retainers

Choosing any one of those that best suits you is necessary to avoid the wastage of teeth straightening treatment and increase the output with good-looking straight teeth. So, we have explained each type along with their advantages and disadvantages.

Fixed (Permanent) Retainers

Fixed retainer consists of a thin wire that is connected to the back surface of the top or bottom teeth and sometimes on both the top and bottom. It is placed on the back surface of the teeth as it will not be visible to the naked eye to outsiders. It is recommended for individuals with a high risk of their teeth shifting after orthodontic treatment.

Pros of Fixed Retainers

  • As they are permanently attached. You don’t have to worry about forgetting to wear them.
  • You need not worry about their appearance as they are placed behind the surface of the teeth. This makes them look invisible.
  • It has long-term effectiveness as it provides continuous retention and reduces the risk of teeth shifting.
  • Since they are bonded to the teeth, you don’t need to remember to put them on.

Cons of Fixed Retainers

  • The wire cannot be removed and cleaned because it is permanently attached. This increases the chances of cavities and plaque by developing bacteria and trapping the food particles.
  • You require the guidance of an orthodontist in case of a broken or loosened wire.
  • Some individuals may experience the feel of wire initially and need time to get used to it.
  • Fixed retainers are typically used for the front teeth and may not provide support for molars.

Removable Retainers

Removable retainers come in two main forms: Hawley retainers and clear plastic retainers. These removable retainers are custom-made in size to fit your newly straightened teeth. They are not fixed to teeth, so you can remove them whenever you need to.

  1. Hawley Retainers: These consist of a metal wire that wraps around the front teeth and a plastic or acrylic base that rests against the roof of the mouth. It is also known as acrylic retainers.
  2. Clear Retainers: Clear Retainers are also known as Essix or Vivera retainers. Clear retainers are invisible and made up of clear plastic. These retainers resemble aligners and fit snugly over your teeth.

Pros of Removable Retainers

  1. In comparison with permanent retainers, it is very easy to clean and maintain oral hygiene as it can be removed. It is also easy to maintain oral hygiene.
  2. Some people find removable retainers more comfortable as they don’t have a permanent wire attached.
  3. With proper cleaning, they don’t contribute to plaque buildup like fixed retainers and reduce the risk of developing gum diseases.
  4. High flexibility as it can be removed while eating or during special occasions.

Cons of Removable Retainers

  1. Requires Discipline to wear removable retainers. Because if you forget to wear them regularly, your teeth may shift back.
  2. They are easier to Lose or Damage as they are removed more often. Due to this, they are more prone to being misplaced or broken.
  3. Over time, clear plastic retainers can wear out and may need to be replaced.
  4. While clear retainers are subtle, Hawley retainers with metal wires are more noticeable.

How to Choose the Right Retainer for You

Choosing between a fixed and removable retainer depends on several factors, including your lifestyle, dental habits, and the orthodontist’s recommendation. Here are some considerations to help you decide,

  • If you are looking for a hassle-free option, then a fixed retainer is ideal since you won’t have to remember to wear it.
  • If you prioritize oral hygiene, then using a removable retainer is better as it allows for easier cleaning and maintenance.
  • If you are at a high risk of teeth shifting, then your orthodontist may recommend a fixed retainer for better retention.
  • If you prefer an invisible retainer, then a clear plastic retainer offers discreet retention.
  • If you are responsible for wearing appliances, then a removable retainer can work well if you commit to wearing it as prescribed.

Caring for Your Retainer

Choosing the correct retainer is important and likewise, caring for your retainer is also important to make the orthodontic treatment a successful one. The maintenance of the retainer also ensures its longevity.

For Fixed Retainers

  • Brush and floss carefully around the wire to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Use a floss threader or water flosser to clean between teeth.

For Removable Retainers

  • Rinse your retainer after each use to prevent bacteria buildup.
